Supporting Pupils Who Fail to Grasp A Concept

Supporting children who fail to grasp a concept or procedure:

Focus question: How does supporting children who fail to grasp a concept or procedure contribute to the effectiveness of Teaching for Mastery in our school.

This theme looks to support schools to implement strategies to meet the following Essence of Mathematics Teaching for Mastery’ statement:

If a pupil fails to grasp a concept or procedure, this is identified quickly, and gaps in understanding are addressed systematically to prevent them falling behind.

Our leads for this theme have effectively implemented a system of ‘Same day interventions’ alongside fidelity to Teaching for Mastery in everyday lesson and will support participants to explore this approach for implementation in your own schools.

During the sessions we will consider Teaching for Mastery in depth, with a focus on identifying pupils who are failing to grasp concepts within a Teaching for Mastery lesson. We will explore strategies for addressing this issue including ways of implementing same day intervention with consideration to the barriers and how they can be overcome.
