Best Start in Life
Intensive Targeted Support is available across both primary and secondary phases. Where appropriate, school leaders can be supported to implement change in Reception to embed effective practice and ensure all pupils have the best start in life.
Who can take part?
Intensive Support is designed for schools that do not currently have the capacity to benefit fully from the standard Teaching for Mastery Programme. This may include schools that have not previously engaged with a Maths Hub, or those looking to re-establish their involvement.
Schools can be referred or apply directly through their local Maths Hub. Selection is based on a range of criteria, including attainment data, Ofsted outcomes, or specific referrals (e.g. PEIA requests).
To ensure meaningful impact, schools must be committed to making sustained improvements in mathematics and to developing a long-term relationship with their Maths Hub. This includes a commitment to engage with a Teaching for Mastery Work Group in future years.
What is involved?
Participating schools receive bespoke support from a Maths Hub Intensive Support Partner (ISP)—an experienced practitioner specialising in whole-school development.
The ISP will work closely with school leaders to:
Build capacity for sustained improvement
Develop a supportive culture for maths teaching and learning
Plan, implement and evaluate a tailored improvement strategy

Strengthen the school’s capacity to lead and sustain change in mathematics
Develop effective systems, structures and practices that support high-quality teaching
Establish a strong and lasting partnership with the Maths Hub
Enable schools to fully engage with Teaching for Mastery approaches over time

What is the cost?
Intensive Support is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme and is free to eligible schools that are able to commit to the programme.
