Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics: Number Pathway 2025–2026

Who can take part?

This pathway is designed for primary teachers who want to strengthen their expertise in teaching number and arithmetic. It may be particularly valuable if you:

• Have recently changed year groups or phases,

• Have had limited maths-specific training, or

• Simply want to deepen your subject and pedagogical knowledge in number.

What is involved?

The Number Pathway focuses on developing both subject knowledge and classroom practice for teaching number across the primary years.

• Equivalent of four days of professional learning, spread across at least two terms.

• Ongoing opportunities to apply and refine new approaches in your classroom.

• Collaboration with colleagues to share experiences and reflect on impact.

What will you learn?

By taking part, you will:

• Help pupils build secure number sense and confidence in working with numbers.

• mathematical thinking clearly and accurately.

• Strengthen your understanding of progression in number and calculation across the primary years.

• Explore pedagogical approaches that enhance conceptual understanding, fluency, and reasoning in number.

What is the cost?

The Number Pathway (2025–2026) is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme and is free to participating schools.
