ORACY

Focus question: How does a spotlight on oracy and the use of the NCETM Oracy Framework contribute to the effectiveness of teaching for mastery in our school?

This focus theme will explore how purposeful talk, active listening, and the development of mathematical language can deepen pupils’ understanding and reasoning. Using the NCETM Oracy Framework (2025) as a guide, participants will investigate how oracy supports the Essence of Mathematics Teaching for Mastery, helping all pupils to make meaningful connections and articulate their thinking. Through collaborative inquiry, lesson design, and observation, participants will:

· Develop strategies for fostering purposeful mathematical talk in classrooms.

· Explore how teachers’ listening and questioning can shape learning.

· Consider how oracy creates more equitable learning experiences.

· Consider embedding consistent, effective oracy practice across the school.

Please note, although these sessions are held online, you may be asked to complete some school-based tasks during the session.
