Mixed Age

Mixed age – Teaching year 3/4 and 5/6 classes through a whole class teaching approach using the curriculum prioritisation materials:

Focus question: How can schools with mixed-age classes implement teaching for mastery effectively?

In the past few years, NCETM have developed guidance to support the teaching of year 3/4 and 5/6 together as a whole class. This focus theme is for schools who have begun to use these materials or would like to explore these materials due to a forecast of mixed age classes next year. It is suitable for schools who are currently using the Curriculum Prioritisation materials or Oak National Academy, or to schools who are looking to use these for a whole class approach.

During the sessions we will focus on:

· Understanding the rationale for choosing this approach

· Understanding considerations for implementation

· Strengthening use of the 5 big ideas

· Navigating the materials

· Planning support for staff

We will also touch upon some possible approaches for teaching years 1 and 2 separately if you have a mix in KS1.
