Who can take part?
These programmes are designed for individuals who would like to develop their specialist knowledge for teaching maths to three- to five-year-olds. This may be particularly relevant for teachers that have switched to this age group or have not received specific training in maths.
What is involved?
This programme is designed to improve the subject knowledge and pedagogical knowledge for all practitioners teaching and supporting the learning of early maths.
There are two types of SKTM Early Years Work Groups: Pathway One: Number Patterns and Structures and Pathway Two: Spatial Reasoning. Each pathway is the equivalent of a four-day programme and has three core elements, three associated pedagogy sessions, and a task to support the transition from theory to practice. There is also a final core unit that aims to review quality provision.
Places are still available on our Spatial Reasoning Work Group which starts on Tuesday 14th January at Westfield School, Bourne End.
What is spatial reasoning?
Spatial reasoning is the ability to visualise, manipulate, and understand spatial relationships between objects. This vital skill is foundational for learning key mathematical concepts, including:
Geometry: Visualizing shapes, angles, transformations, and symmetry.
Measurement: Interpreting scale, area, and volume.
Number Sense: Understanding number lines, grids, and spatial arrangements.
Problem-Solving: Applying logical reasoning to tackle real-world and abstract math challenges.
