This work Group is for all teachers, although it is particularly recommended for teachers who are current or former participants of a Teaching for Mastery Work Group and maths subject leaders. Bookings are available for a maximum of two teachers from each school.

The aim of this Work Group is to:

  • Understand the potential of maths journals to enhance the development of Teaching for Mastery approaches, particularly in respect of capturing mathematical thinking
  • To engage in collaborative professional development to explore mathematical journaling within schools, using gap tasks, leading to the sharing of good practice
  • To develop further/ embed the ‘Big Idea’ from Teaching for Mastery of mathematical thinking, facilitated in part through the development and use of maths journals
  • To explore possible structures that can be used when planning for children to use maths journals.
  • To understand some of the ‘technical elements’, and challenges associated with the introduction of journaling
  • To develop consistent approaches to Teaching for Mastery, through the use of this tool across the entire school
  • To establish school practice that embeds Teaching for Mastery in the school

Funding: This Work Group is funded through the Maths Hub grant from the DfE and is offered Free of charge
